By Roger K. Mukai
Folks, if you're a technophile, like me, you're probably interested in some of the new appliances known as MEDIA PLAYERS or STREAMING MEDIA PLAYERS. I have tried most of them, including: ROKU, ROKU2, ROKU3, MICCA MPLAY-HD, NeoTV, Sling, and Western Digital. All have their specific best-in-class features, all have their bugs and annoyances. But, for the money, by far, the one by Western Digital, the WD TV Live - NOT the WD TV Play - but WD TV Live streaming media player is, hands down, the best appliance. It's biggest weakness? A huge lack of quality documentation. I had to discover most of what I learned about it through trial, error, fumbling my way through the menus, and hours of Google searches.
If all you want to do is Netflix, Hulu/Hulu-Plus, Amazon Prime, then any ROKU box will do you fine. I don't like ROKU 2 however - it HANGS far too often to be useful. But, if like me, you care about being able to watch a combination of "Streaming Media like Netflix/Hulu/etc, and also, watch your own local VIDEO library, there are only 2-candidates: NeoTV by Netgear, and WD TV Live. There is nothing WRONG with NeoTV. It works fine. But, WD TV Live has 3-features that place it far above all other media players. It allows you to have your media on a local USB hard drive, or; a NETWORK SHARED hard drive on your LAN, or even a USB data stick. It streams video, even YouTube quickly and seamlessly, even wireless - which is how I do it.
But, the feature set it has which no other has: You can put a USB bus splitter on the usb plug, hang 1, 2, even 3 HARD DRIVES off of the USB port, and; it will RECOGNIZE, CATALOG, and PLAY all the videos on all 3-drives as though it were one massive volume. Moreover, when your media is stored on a USB HARD DRIVE (alas not when on a NETWORK HDD), it has the ability for you to create a VIDEO PLAY QUEUE. Actually, a MEDIA play queue. It can be VIDEOS and MUSIC and even PHOTOS. Whatever you "tag and add into the QUEUE", when you press PLAY from within the queue, it plays what you added, in the order you added it.
Why is this special? If you have 3,000-VIDEOS (as I do - not pirated. I RIPPED them all from my 25-years of DVDs that I've collected.) You want to setup an evening, or even an entire weekend's worth of entertainment to fit your mood. Without this QUEUE feature, like NeoTV, you cannot do this. You have to play "one-at-a-time" with NeoTV. But, this WD TV Live Queue is awesome.
Second feature I love is, it goes to the INTERNET and uses TMDB and TVDB to pull down the DVD covers, Video description and class (Romance, Drama, etc), and then when you want to scroll through your videos, it will show them to you with DVD covers and descriptions. The menus allow 4-different views. Once you find a video you want to watch, or music to play, you select "Add to QUEUE", and when you have your queue built - you go.
It even remembers what was playing last, and pretty close to the moment it died, if the power goes out, or you turn it off yourself. It asks you "RESTART? or RESUME?". A nice touch.
The problem is, NONE of the 10-pages of a 3x5inch booklet that the box comes with, explains ANY OF THESE THINGS, or even mentions that it is possible to do anything in a QUEUE or from a HARD DRIVE. That is where it lacks.
Now, there should also be a trouble shooting section - and - there is not. I discovered that there are two specific things you need to be able to FIX. One is what VIDEO RESOLUTION it uses with your TV. If you chose the WRONG ONE, the video FLICKERS almost constantly - and that is horribly annoying. Calling customer support on this issue is a waste of time. It is fixed by you choosing, for instance, 1080I vs. 1080P. My TV is a 1080P at 25Mhz, but; with the box, it prefers to do 1080I at 60MHz. That eliminates the flicker.
It also needs to know if your tv is 16:9 or 4:3 - which it may automatically choose wrong. Depends on the newness of your TV. All of this can be configured by YOU under one of the SETUP menus. It takes time to understand what the menus do. Once you get it right however, it works fabulously.
I should also note, it is WIRELESS-N and it works on both 5G and 2.4G bands. Not at the same time, but; it will recognize both if they are available. Another caution, I use mine tilted on the side. Why? Because it does get WARM, and; after 8+hours of use, if it is not vertical, it has a tenancy to LOCKUP. I think it is overheating. When I started using it turned 90-degrees from flat, that problem went away. I have 3-of these boxes, and; all three have that same behavior - they prefer to be turned up on the side.
I will close this by saying, the REMOTE works very well. I wish it had glow in the dark buttons. Not BACKLIT, but; those kind that glow because they got waved in front of a light. That would be the only thing the remote could do better. Also, there are 4 specialized buttons that are GREEN, RED, YELLOW and BLUE. Again, not documented well. BLUE brings up and hides the PLAY QUEUE. YELLOW changes how videos are presented in the MENU and QUEUE. RED changes where it looks for your media (HARD DRIVE, NETWORK, etc). GREEN changes how it filters and sorts the media on your library (genre, actor, etc).
AMAZON has the best price for this box. New (as of the writing of this review) it is $90 new, and $70 refurbished. Nobody else comes close to that NEW price. Other vendors all charge at-least $100-dollars for the device brand new. I have 2-that I purchased NEW and one REFURBISHED. The REFURB is my BACKUP. The other two are on my LIVING ROOM and BEDROOM TVs.

Wrong unit received
By J. Wager
I thought I could save some money buying this refurb unit, but it has been one big cluster F. I was so happy to receive the unit before the estimated delivery date. I quickly hooked everything up and began setting the unit. I was having a lot of trouble with the time, and couldn't get it to read the correct time. When I went into the apps area, I noticed pandora and hulu were not there. I did a factory reset and firmware upgrade, but had no success. That's when I noticed the side of the box had the part number WDBGXT0000NBK-EESN covered up with a printed sticker that said WDBHG70000. The software and unit itself said WDBGXT0000NBK. I did some research, and discovered that I had been sent a European WDTV Live, and someone had just stuck a sticker over the original part number. The euro models don't get all the apps like pandora, due to licensing outside the USA. I paid for a US model, so this pisses me off. Now, I have return the damn unit, and purchase another, as the company selling these doesn't offer exchanges. Great! If you have purchased one of these refurbished models, check the bottom of the unit and make sure it says WDBHG70000NBK. If not, you have a European model that will not allow you to easily access all the apps. I guess you take your chances buying refurbished products. I hope I get the correct one when I reorder (once my refund is processed).

Very reliable media center!
By Murilo Bianchini
The media center is awsome... I was thinking of rating 4 stars because it needed a little more stability. I had problems on the youtube program two times. But after a big update the problems went away and I decided to rate 5 stars.
