By ToddNoch
I've been researching CableCard capable devices for a couple of years. For those that aren't familiar with CableCards, they let you watch premium Cable TV content such as HD channels & paid movies channels (i.e channels 100+ Basic). The only option out there for a long time was from TiVo, but I didn't want to pay their subscription fee. Comcast gave me a CableCard for free with no monthly fees. I'll return their box and save their monthly rental fee. Samsung just released this unit and I couldn't be happier (unless they come out with a DVR version).
It works great with my Samsung phone, sharing pictures, music & video. It has a Web browser and great VOD services such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video & YouTube. The TV Guide is pretty nice. My only criticism so far is the remote is weak in features. It would be nice if it was more universal and had a keyboard/mouse.
I highly recommend it if your looking to add a cable box or replace a rental unit from Comcast. I did not purchase mine from Amazon because they were out of stock at the time.

A good alternative to the cable box but still has a few things it falls short on ...
By Adrian
The Samsung smart media player is a solid product but does have a few issues. Breaking this product down, its essentially multiple products in one small box. It supports Digital Cable TV (including clear QAM channels), with or without a cablecard. It supports DLNA so will play files back from your media server. It supports Samsungs Apps platform (so has Netflix, Amazon instant and Vudu) ... and finally has universal search across multiple platforms.
For Live TV, as I mention this box will work with or without a Cablecard. If you don't use a cable card the box has a few limitations. It will receive any Clear QAM channels, however, you can't use the TV guide and the channel numbers won't correspond to anything your cable provider describes. It will work though. Just to note, Samsung won't allow you to map real channels to virtual ones, or re-name channels/label channels.
If you use a Cablecard, then you can use the TV guide. Its OK ... but doesn't seem to respect any channel lists (favorites) you may have set up ... even if you delete channels, they all seem to show up in the tv guide. This seems like a shortcoming, and something that could easily be addressed in a software update. Navigating the tv guide is a bit sluggish, and could be improved.
For local media playback, its solid enough, supporting most of the popular video, audio formats .. including support for AVC, VC-1 and MPEG2 all over DLNA. It will pass through Dolby Digital, but not TrueHD or DTS and DTS-MA. So be warned if you are looking for a universal media player.
The apps platform used is Samsungs older one. So not the latest, on the new Samsung TVs. The apps are OK. Amazon Instant and Vudu are good. In fact Amazon instant seems to support 1080p and Dolby Digital + streams .. which is one of the few boxes out there that does. Netflix on the other hand seems a bit crippled only supporting at best 720p streams. The build date on the Netflix app seems old, so again this can all be addressed by software updates.
The product has universal search across services. So for example if you searched for Seinfeld .. it would show you that its probably available on one of your cable tv channels as well as a online service like Crackle. That's very good. Its not quite as polished as search on the Roku ... but still very good.
The device is compatible with Samsungs remote app (for iOS), and does work with Android as well .. but I can't test any of those features.
So who might benefit from a product like this? Well certainly it may be better than your existing cable box, especially if you pay to rent it each month. Perhaps you don't have a smart TV or your TV doesn't have a TV guide ... then again this box would be good. Perhaps you have a front facing projector and want to watch regular cable tv on it .... again, a great product. Perhaps you are looking for a single device that supports tv, apps (like Netflix and Amazon), and play the odd media file ... again great for that.
All in all, this is a solid product, but does have a few things that could be improved ... mainly through software updates. I would recommend it for offering a lot of features for a reasonably small amount.

No more box rentals or guide subscription fees if you don't need a DVR, + smart apps
By shebam
If really promoted this product should save a lot of people a lot money. Any location on any cable system where you're renting a non-DVR cable box, you can stop the rental fees with this single purchase. No subscription charge for the Guide. And you can get a bunch of on-line services, movies and shows, which you can't with the standard bottom feeder digital cable box that you're paying $10 - $14 a month for.
The FCC has required the cable companies to mail you a CableCARD if you call and ask for one, so you can avoid waiting at home for the cable guy. Follow the onscreen step-by-step --it's easier than the printed "Quick Start" sheet. While cable industry support of retail CableCARD products used to be horrendous and still sometimes is, the requirement that they use CableCARDs in their own boxes, and that they must support mailed CableCARDs, has required systems to automate their support -- though you still have to make a phone call to read them the numbers on the screen after the CableCARD is in. Was real easy for me. Then it takes about an hour to download all the channel info online. (The free Guide is better than the guide in low-end boxes, at least in my system.)
I represent consumer electronics manufacturers who've been frustrated in trying to get support for competitive products like this. TiVo has made it work, now Samsung. (And it's about 1/4 the size of the cranky rented box it replaced.)
